HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A new access road into Chain Park at Twin Forks in Hattiesburg is nearing completion.

Chain Park opened in 2010 and was named for former Hattiesburg Mayor Bobbie Chain. Chain donated the land to the city with the stipulation that it would be used as a recreation facility for the residents.

The new access road is located on Highway 11 North at the city limits. A eight foot pedestrian and bike path part is of the project and is located parallel to the road. The $500,000 project is being funded through a community block grant provided through HUD.

Once complete, the road will provide easier access to the park which will allow to the city to expand its usage.

"We believe there will be an increase in usage," said Bert Kuyrkendall, Director of Engineering, City of Hattiesburg. "We can also can plan events like concerts, outdoor events like festivals. All because we will have better access to the park."

The new access road is expected to be complete in March.
