Mississippi schools making big decisions about sex education

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Starting in August sex education will be taught by every public school in the state.

House Bill 999 was passed by lawmakers, requiring all schools in the state to teach abstinence-only or abstinence-plus.

Abstinence-only education will allow teachers to teach students about abstaining from sex but will exclude reproductive health information and forms birth control. Meanwhile, abstinence-plus will include lessons about abstaining, plus give ways to preventing pregnancy and how to avoid getting sexual transmitted diseases.

All school curriculum must be complete by June 30, 2012.
