HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Several Mississippi State Legislators paid a visit to the Dubard School For Language Disorders on the USM campus Friday Morning.
School Director, Maureen Martin gave the legislators a tour through the facility visiting the library, computer room, and several classrooms. The school is for children from age three to 13 who have severe language, speech, and hearing impairments. The children go to the school on a full time basis 11 months out of the year.
The legislators were shown how the school goes about helping the children overcome their impairments with the goal being for them to eventually return to a regular school environment.
"Many of the legislators may have heard of the Dubard School, but really don't know what happens here," said Martin. "We want to explain what an impact this has on children and families from about 15 counties from the coast to Magee and east and west."
The Dubard School was founded in 1962 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
