HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Work on a new aeration system at the Hattiesburg South Lagoon is now complete.
The $3,000,000 upgrades at the lagoon are part of a plan the city has to eliminate the foul smells coming from the lagoon at certain times of the year. The first part of the plan was completed in Dec. when the city and USA Yeast reached agreement for the company to build a new on site system to treat their wastewater prior to it getting in the city sewer system.
CDBG grant money from the Mississippi Development Authority will be used to fund the treatment system at USA Yeast.
The final step in the smell reduction plan is the removal of the sludge from the bottom of the lagoon. That project will get under way in Feb. and is expected to take about nine months.
Burt Kyurkendal, Hattiesburg Director of Engineering, says the timeline to complete all facets of the project is 12 to 18 months.
