Hattiesburg businessman, Doc Roberts, who passed away this week at the age of 82 will be sorely missed.
A native of Hattiesburg, H.D. "Doc" Roberts was President and CEO of R & M Foods and owned both Sunflower supermarkets and founded Corner Market Grocery Stores in the Pine Belt area. As a businessman he always strived to stay ahead of the game. As a philanthropist he was faithful to give back to a wide range of causes. Certainly, he was one of the chief donors to the University of Southern Mississippi.
Doc Roberts had battled heart disease for many years…but kept a good attitude and, as I personally found out one day, was a man of faith who was unashamed to share it. Several years ago we were playing in a golf tournament together and I inquired as to how he was doing. He quickly let me know that he was doing great due to "his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ". I don't think he would mind my sharing that. He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn and they were an obviously close couple who enjoyed each other and their family a great deal. Doc Roberts had the kind of spirit we would all do well to emulate and I feel it is only proper to salute such an outstanding citizen and person on a life well lived. I'm Jim Cameron and that's today's Viewpoint.
As always, let us hear from you.
