HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg has just made its largest single purchase of police cars in the history of the city. 20 new Dodge Chargers will soon be used by the Hattiesburg Police Dept. to patrol city streets.
They were bought at a cost of nearly $453,000 and will be phased-in to replace older police cruisers.
Before they can hit the road, the cars have to be outfitted with computers, cameras, radar and cages.
"Over the next month or so, we're going to be sending the vehicles off to be striped out and have the equipment installed," said Lt. Eric Proulx, of the Hattiesburg Police Dept. "As each one comes available, it will be assigned to a specific officer on patrol," Proulx said.
Five other 2012 model Chargers were purchased for the Hattiesburg Police Dept. a few months ago.
