A military police officer at Camp Shelby was saved by his ballistic vest after being shot by an unknown suspect Friday night.

Authorities are searching for the man who shot a military police officer at Camp Shelby during a security check on the post Friday night. Details are incomplete, but Camp Shelby officials say the MP, who was wearing a ballistic vest, was making a routine security check at the north gate around midnight when he was shot.
They say the vest stopped the bullet and saved his life.
The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Forrest General Hospital for a precautionary evaluation and was released. The suspect, who is white, fled the scene of the shooting.
It's being investigated by the Forrest County Sheriff's Department and the Army Criminal Investigations Division.
