Calcium pills pose health risks

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our bodies, needed for strong teeth and bones, but calcium supplements may do more harm than good.

University researchers in New Zealand recently reviewed studies involving nearly 50,000 women taking calcium supplements and found strong evidence suggesting that women who take 1,000 mg of calcium as daily supplements may be at a 30 percent higher risk for hardening of the arteries, blood clots and stroke.

"Keep in mind that only calcium supplements are associated with these risks," explains wellness expert Peggy Hall. "Remember, increasing calcium isn't necessarily the goal -- increasing your bone density is!"

Peggy explains how to get calcium the natural way and how to build your bones with enjoyable, everyday activities.

"First, make sure you hang on to the calcium your body is already storing in your bones," Peggy says. "Your body excretes calcium when you're stressed, overtired or undernourished."

Peggy's top bone-building tips:

  1. Reduce stress by getting enough sleep and taking some time for fun each day!
  2. Get outside in the natural sunlight for about 15 minutes every day. Sunlight is required for your body to create Vitamin D, which works with calcium for stronger bones.
  3. Do weight-bearing exercises, like taking a brisk 10-minute walk every day.
  4. Quit smoking.
  5. Cut back on red meat, caffeine, sugar and alcohol, all of which cause your body to excrete calcium.

Peggy recommends that you eat more calcium-containing foods such as:

  • Green lettuces
  • Sesame seeds
  • Salmon
  • Beans
  • Figs
  • Artichokes

"With a little effort on your part, you should be able to get the calcium you need without taking supplements," Peggy says. "But check with your doctor before making any changes to your routine."
