PURVIS, MS (WDAM) - Shortly before noon on Friday a Purvis man was struck by a southbound freight train and later died.
Purvis police officials said John Cordelle Sharard Griffith, 20, of Purvis, along with two other people, was trying to run across railroad tracks west of Purvis Public Library in order to beat an oncoming high-speed train. Griffith was grazed and thrown 30 yards away, but the other individuals were left unscathed.
Griffith was transported to a local hospital by AAA's Life Flight helicopter. Authorities at the scene originally believed his injuries were not life-threatening.
Later, at 1:45 p.m., Griffith was pronounced dead, according to Deputy Coroner Lamar County Anna Miller. His body is being transported to Jackson for an autopsy.
