COVINGTON COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The skeletal remains of several horses were discovered during a rescue operation to save a number of neglected animals at a residence in Covington County.
Deputies from the Covington County Sheriff's Department went to a residence on Highway 532 in the Hot Coffee Community Thursday with a warrant to seize a number of animals that had been determined to be malnourished and mistreated. The deputies teamed with Hub City Horse Haven of Hattiesburg and the Southern Pines Animal Shelter to round up the animals.
During the roundup bones from at least three to four horse were discovered in a wooded area adjacent to the property.
"This was a pretty bad case," said Kelly Creel, Co-founder of Hub City Horse Haven. "It's really sad because you hope its not just the State of Mississippi. This is something going on everywhere."
Six horses and one donkey were rescued from the property. They will be rehabilitated and sent out to foster care until they can adopted. The one dog rescued was taken to the Southern Pines Animal Shelter where he will cared for and placed up for adoption.
The owner of the property has yet to be identified. No word has been released on what charges he may be brought up on.
