HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Students from Southern Miss investigated a crime scene Thursday. But neither the crime or the scene were real. The students were a part of a Crime Scene Documentation class.

Everything the students have learned in the class room was put to the test at Comfort Inn Suites. Two rooms were made to look like a homicides had taken place, and it was up to the students to examine the area to help police.

Instructor of Forensic Science at Southern Miss, Dean Bertram, says he believes the students are truly interested in the work.

"I do not think that they are here just because they watch "CSI" and "NCIS". I think that is a big misnomer. I think if you pulled all the college students across the country they are not here today because they watched some episode of the media. I  think it really is a lack of education. People don't come here for that. They are here for the right reasons," said Bertram.

Approximately 200 students are in the Forensic Science Program, which is housed in the School of Criminal Justice.
