LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Pine Belt Martin Luther King Parade Committee kicked off the celebration off his birth Friday morning.

Students from Laurel High School attended a program on the impact Dr. King had on the civil rights movement.

Friday's program is the first of many during the month to celebrate King's 83rd birthday.  Saturday morning there is a MLK Community Forum at the Oak Park Magnet School. The annual banquet in honor of Dr. King is Saturday night at the Sanderson Farms Corporate Headquarters in Laurel. A Gospel Fest is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the New Vision Baptist Church in Waynesboro.

Three big events are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 14 in Laurel. The day starts off with the annual King Parade in the downtown area. A Battle of the Bands follows the parade at Laurel High School and a MLK Basketball Shoot-Out starts at noon, also at the school.

Jan. 9 through 13 is also Dr. King education week at several area Pine Belt Schools.
