FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Bond has been set for a Hattiesburg man charged with aggravated assault in connection with the shooting of a Hattiesburg bank manager.
James Alpha Smith, 42, is currently being held in the Forrest County Jail on a $450,000 bond.
Forrest County sheriff's deputies arrested Smith Tuesday night after the Monday shooting of Hattiesburg Trustmark Bank executive Mary Ann Barnes.
Barnes allegedly told police she was shot at a nearby Junior Food Mart, but after further investigation evidence was found showing Barnes was underneath the Glendale Bridge when the shooting occurred.
Sources close to the investigation said Barnes was underneath the Glendale Bridge talking with an acquaintance when Smith allegedly tried to rob her, and then after shots were fired the acquaintance jumped out of the truck.
