HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - More than 50 needy families in the Palmer's Crossing area of Hattiesburg are looking forward to a happy Christmas, thanks to the members of the Jesse L. Brown Elks Lodge.
Wednesday, lodge members handed out free dinner boxes and toys to dozens of selected families. It's a holiday tradition that dates back more than 30 years.
The dinner boxes included hams donated by the folks at Hattiesburg's Christian Services, while the toys were donated by guests who attended last weekend's Appreciation Gala hosted by State Representative Percy Watson.
"This is our way of giving back to the community," said John Duncan, treasurer for the lodge. "We are a Christian organization that gives services back and forth to our community and we enjoy doing it," Duncan said.
"It is the season to be giving and I appreciate everything that they have done for me and my family," said Dijuana Harris, one of the people receiving assistance from the lodge.
"It's going to make a big difference, especially in the household with the kids. They love to eat," Harris said.
A total of 52 families were helped by the Jesse L. Brown Lodge this year.
