HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Lots of Hattiesburg children have been sent on their Christmas vacation with smiles on their faces, thanks to the folks at the Hattiesburg Police Athletic League. On Tuesday, dozens of youngsters ages eight to 17 enjoyed an afternoon Christmas Party at the Ben McNair Center, courtesy of the Police Athletic League and sponsor Dr. Michael Zaleski.

The kids ate lots of food and took part in several games.

"We just wanted to send them home with a gift from us, to let them know that we love them and we care for them and just wanted them to know how much that we are here for them," said Capt. Ricky Myers, executive director of the Hattiesburg Police Athletic League.

"What a wonderful thing this is for the community, what these officers and adults do to get these kids and work with them everyday, turn things around for our community," said Dr. Michael Zaleski. "I think all communities should have this type thing," Zaleski said.

The Hattiesburg chapter of the Police Athletic League was founded in 2010.

The organization began in New York City in 1914.
