Forrest County Supervisors approve new district lines

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Forrest County supervisor districts will have some new borders come 2013.

Today the board passed the final maps which lay out how district lines will be redrawn in early 2013. The redistricting comes after the US Census showed huge population growth in the Petal area, as well as growth in districts two and four - which are comprised of mainly minority populations. The new borders will spread Petal's growing population out between districts to make sure the number of people in each district remains equal.

The other half of the redistricting project - deciding on new Justice Court and Constable jurisdiction lines - will likely mirror the changes in the maps adopted today. Those will likely be voted on in January and, after that, both plans will be sent to the Justice Department for approval.
