HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hundreds of underprivileged Hattiesburg children will soon have a Merry Christmas, thanks to lots of generous guests who attended an annual holiday event Saturday night hosted by an influential state lawmaker.

The youngsters will be receiving toys and educational items donated by folks who attended the 23rd annual Appreciation Gala at the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

It was hosted by House Ways and Means Chairman Percy Watson of Hattiesburg.

Watson asked each of those attending to bring a gift for a needy child. They will be donated to several local organizations which will distribute them for Christmas.

"You actually start something, you do it one year, two years, three years and before you know it, 23 years have passed and you're continuing to do it, so I'm just very privileged to have the opportunity to do this for this community," Watson said.

The organizations receiving the donated items are Christian Services, P.A.C.E. Inc. and the Jesse L. Brown Elks Lodge.
