HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The folks at Hattiesburg's Christian Services are celebrating the silver anniversary of a holiday event that puts smiles on the faces of underprivileged children at Christmas. The 25th annual, "Birthday Party for Jesus" Saturday gave nearly 500 needy youngsters an early and special Christmas at the Hub City's Ben McNair Center.
During the event, the kids and their families were treated to a special holiday program. The children were then given balloons, a sack lunch, a stuffed animal and a new toy just for them.
"I think that what Christian Services is doing for the children in the community is just outstanding," said Catherine Griffin, who brought her five grandchildren to the party. "Every year it has gotten larger and larger," Griffin said.
Dozens of volunteers with Christian Services also helped make this a special day for the children.
The first "Birthday Party for Jesus" was held in 1986.
