HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Gayle Wicker, the wife of U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, addressed graduating students Friday during fall commencement exercises at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg.

Wicker substituted for Sen. Wicker, who was originally scheduled to speak at two graduation ceremonies, but could not make the trip to the Hub City because of important votes in Washington.

Wicker congratulated graduates, urged them to serve their communities and advised them to be prepared for both successes and setbacks in life.

"In America, the opportunity to make it big involves the risk of falling flat, but this is the land of second chances and we are better because of it," said Wicker. "Those of you who work hard and keep your chins up are almost sure to do well by anyone's standards," she said.

More than 1,200 students received their degrees today.
