HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

10 new firefighters have joined the Hattiesburg Fire Dept.

Friday, Mayor Johnny Dupree hosted a swearing-in ceremony for them at City Hall.

They just completed 16 weeks of training in the Hub City.

A graduation ceremony for the new recruits will be held Friday at 6 p.m. at the Hattiesburg Police and Fire Training Academy.

"The primary goal is to train them to what we call National Fire Protection Association standards, which is the standard accepted by the State for minimum standards training for firefighters," said David Webster, chief of the Hattiesburg Fire Dept. "We have to train them to that level and we conduct the field program here, but it's under the auspices of the State Fire Academy," Webster said.

Today's swearing-in brings the total number of firefighers and command staff at the Hattiesburg Fire Dept. to 113. That's just a few short of the maximum authorized.
