HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The University of Southern Mississippi head football coach Larry Fedora signed a contract Wednesday morning, officially making him the head football coach of the University of North Carolina.
Fedora is expected back in Hattiesburg sometime on Thursday, and he is also expected to coach the Golden Eagles in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl in Hawaii on Dec. 24.
Southern Miss Athletics Director Richard Gianini has accompanied Fedora in New York since Monday, and said he should be back in Hattiesburg sometime Wednesday night. Fedora and Gianini are traveling separately.
Fedora, 49, leaves the Golden Eagle football program after four seasons as head coach, compiling an over-all record of 33-19. Fedora's team captured the 2011 Conference USA regular season championship with a dominant 49-28 win over sixth-ranked Houston. The win also gave Southern Miss its 11th of the season, making the 2011 squad the winningest in program history.
