December 5, 2011
2011 was a championship season for Southern Miss…let us count some of the ways. Saturday's dominating win over number six Houston propelled them to the C-USA championship. For the first time in the 100-year history of the football program they have won 11 games in a season. The Golden Eagles are headed to their 10th straight bowl appearance in the December 24th Hawaii bowl—14 bowl games in the last 15 years. Quarterback Austin Davis has established most of the career records at Southern Miss and that is really saying something when you consider they have had quarterbacks like Reggie Collier and Brett Favre. The Golden Eagle's returned 8 pass interceptions for touchdowns this year setting a new NCAA record previously set by Tennessee in 1971. Southern Miss frankly has often had a difficult time getting the respect they deserve. But they have established a body of work over the past several decades that has brought them and South Mississippi tremendous recognition. Congratulations to the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagle football team and head coach Larry Fedora and best of luck in Honolulu on Christmas Eve. I'm Jim Cameron and that's today's Viewpoint.
