Laurel High School Choir heads to Carnegie Hall

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Soon the talented voices of the Laurel High School Choir will be a part of a stage known for its tradition of excellence.

"About three or four weeks ago I received a call from Carnegie Hall, and basically they extended us an informal invitation depending upon our resume," said Laurel High School Choir Director, Leander Bridges.

Bridges says once he handed over the choir's resume it wasn't long before the informal invite became formal.

"So, when I told him that for the past five years that our program has been a superior rated program, they extended us a formal invitation about two weeks ago. The rest as they say is history," said Bridges.

Bridges hopes it's history in the making, and a couple of choir members can't wait.

"I was very excited. It was breath taking. I had many reactions to the news. I was proud. I  told my mom, she was proud," said 12th grade member of the choir, Deandrea Caver.

" I was more excited than anything, because you don't hear of high school choirs being invited to such an event," said Choir Member, Daryl McKines.

Principal of Laurel High School Carl-Michael Day, says the community has shown great support towards the choir by helping them with the finances to make the trip.

"They have to raise right at $60,000 to be able to go. Well, fortunately we have had almost half of that raised," said Day.

The choir is doing their part as well...

"The kids are working hard we have set several fundraisers into play for us to garner as many funds on our on," said Bridges.

Bridges says the choir still needs some help with  raising funds, so if you would like to help the Laurel High School Choir make it to Carnegie Hall you can contact Leaner Bridges at 601-649-4145.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported there are now 12 cases of West Nile Virus in our state Thursday morning. Although, every case is serious, that number pales in comparison, to the 247 cases in 2012. Still, you have to put a human face onto these figures to really know what this virus is capable of doing.
