HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

State legislators from South Mississippi addressed faculty and staff in a public forum at USM Wednesday to discuss a wide range of topics of concern.

Representing the Pine Belt were Senators Billy Hudson and Joey Fillingane on the Senate side and Representatives Toby Barker and Larry Byrd from the House. The Senate and House go back into session on January 3, 2012 and  the legislators agreed that it will be another tough year for the budget especially in the area of education.

"There continues to be a continual argument for more dollars, more dollars," said Larry Byrd, District 104 Representative. "At some time we are going to have  to make some educational reforms. We are going to look at things like charter schools and vouchers to help parents find the best fit and maximize the dollars we have to make the most of the resources that are available."

Faculty and staff from the coast campus had an opportunity to join in on the forum via video conference.
