MARION COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Frances Lurleen Smith of Marion County is in jail after leading deputies and state troopers on a 44-mile chase reaching speeds of 115 mph through portions of Marion and Walthall counties.
Marion County Sheriff, Berkley Hall, says the chase began after witnesses reported the woman driving erratically. During the hot pursuit, Smith lost her left front tire and was riding on the rim, but still managed to reach triple digit speeds. Authorities say Smith reportedly slowed down just enough for a passenger to jump out of the car at an intersection, but that passenger has not been located.
Deputies finally bumped Smith's car off the road on Highway 98 near the Columbia city limits. Smith is currently in the Marion-Walthall county jail facing two counts of aggravated assault on police officers as well as felony fleeing.
