HATTIESBURG,MS (WDAM)- Drug court is an opportunity for people to get a second chance, and now our service men and women can get one too.
Thanks to Bob Helfrich, Circuit Court Judge for Forrest and Perry county, there is now a veterans court. This afternoon a dozen veterans took part in the first court session. The veterans will receive help in meetings each week as well as from the VA's Justice Outreach Specialist.
Helfrich says its important to be proactive and treat the underlying issue that causes repeated criminal activity.
"Over 140,000 vets are in our prisons and jails, and I'm not saying that they deserve special treatment but if anybody does it is the vets. It's those issues that PTSD and the traumatic brain issues, those issues that we have to address and be proactive to be ready for when all these men and women come home," said Helfrich.
