HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg downtown business community is hoping holiday shoppers will put the historic district on the top of their list when it comes to locations for gift-buying in the next few weeks. Business owners downtown are hoping a new campaign called, "Shift Your Shopping," will encourage Hattiesburg-area residents to spend their dollars downtown, at local and independent businesses.
Saturday, lots of downtown shops and restaurants stayed open late as part of a holiday open house.
"I think it's going to work really well," said Diane Shepherd, a member of the Board of Directors for the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association. "I think it's going to raise awareness of why people should shop local. Those dollars that people spend at their local stores turn over 3 1/2 time in our local economy and the money stays here in Hattiesburg longer," Shepherd said.
About 3 dozen restaurants, shops, galleries and night clubs are currently doing business in the historic Hattiesburg downtown area.
