Local volunteers collect shoe boxes for children in need

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - With the holiday season quickly approaching, folks here in the Pine Belt are coming together to help children in need.

Volunteers were hard at work today, collecting shoe boxes full of gifts at First Baptist of Hattiesburg for Operation Christmas Child.  People fill up empty shoe boxes with anything from school supplies, to toys, to hygiene items, and those boxes are sent to children around the world.

Despite the bad economy, officials expect a lot of donations. Collection center coordinator, Wayne Landers, says their goal this year is 28,000 shoe boxes, nearly 2,700 more than received last year.

Monday wraps up national collection week, but you can still buy a customized box online at www.samaritanspurse.org through December 31st.

Following a school-record 55 wins and run that ended in an 8-7 loss in the NJCAA national championship, Jones County Junior College softball is eager to open the 2018 season on February 3. Coming that close to the school’s first national title serves as motivation enough for the Lady Bobcats. Regardless, expectations are always high for coach Chris Robinson’s teams – JCJC is a combined 105-12 the last two seasons.
