Ohio guardsmen hone their skills at Wesley Medical Center

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - More than 20 National Guardsmen from Charley Company 237th BSB Medical and Brigade Support Company out of Ohio are spending a few days at Wesley Medical Center honing their skills.

The brigade is preparing to deploy to Northern Afghanistan and is at Camp Shelby training for their deployment. The guardsmen who are at Wesley have been able to shadow nurses, physicians, and lab techs to see if their skills are comparable to how procedures are done in the hospital.

The program began earlier this year when Camp Shelby approached the hospital and asked if the soldiers would be able to come over and observe what goes on at the hospital.

"Specifically soldiers who in civilian life are actually radiological technicians, laboratory technicians, medics, paramedics, and emt's, said Travis Sisson, COO, Wesley Medical Center. "This is a way to help polish their skills prior to their deployment, as well as give them an opportunity to round out their skill set."

The brigade will deploy to Afghanistan after the first of the year.
