MOSELLE, MS (WDAM) - Family members of Bobby Ray Dixon were at the New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Moselle Monday afternoon to remember his name.
Dixon died of cancer last November shortly after being released from prison for the 1979 rape and murder of a Hattiesburg woman. Dixon along with two other men spent more than 30 years in prison after being convicted of the crime. Last year all three were exonerated when D-N-A testing proved they were innocent.
Monday, family members said a prayer at the grave site, placed a plaque on his headstone, and released two balloons into the air to their to signify his spirit is still alive.
"When people do people wrong you have to support them," said Willie Dixon, brother of Bobby Ray Dixon. "You have to be there to keep his name alive and let him know that he still lives."
Dixon's family say they will return each year to keep his name alive.
