HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Landowners, business leaders and economic developers met at Southern Miss Saturday to help shape the future of Hattiesburg's central residential and business district. A hands-on visioning workshop gave folks a chance to submit their ideas to help develop the Midtown Hattiesburg Master Plan.
The goal of that plan is to develop the area just south of the Southern Miss campus into a new mixed-use community.
Today's design workshop is the beginning of what organizers call "Charrette Week," and will culminate with a presentation of the design plan next week.
The overall master plan should be finished in a few months.
"When the project is complete, you'll be able to see where the buildings should be, where the parking should be, where the shops might be, where we might have residential development in the area," said Connie B. Cooper, of Cooper/Code Studio Collaborative, consultants for the project.
The design plan will be presented next Thursday night at the Thad Cochran Center on the USM campus.
