Jeff Hammond to Petal Kiwanis Club: "Make a difference"

PETAL, MS (WDAM) - A former commander of US Army forces in Iraq and the current associate athletic director for Southern Miss had some advice for business and political leaders in Petal Tuesday morning...make a difference. Retired Maj. Gen. Jeff Hammond was keynote speaker for the 20th annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast at the Petal Civic Center. The event was hosted by the Petal Kiwanis Club.

Hammond, who was commander of the Multi-National Division-Baghdad in 2008, spoke about his 32-year military career and how his spiritual faith has guided him along the way.

Hammond joined the athletics department at USM after retiring from the Army last year.

"Each day presents a new start," Hammond said. "Each day is an opportunity to for us to choose what we say and how we feel. God expects us to step forward, cross the line, make a difference on behalf of our fellow sister or brother each and every day of our life," he said.

Hammond was also a starting quarterback for the USM Golden Eagles football team before graduating in 1978.
