HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - More than 1,500 people gathered at Southern Miss to help fight breast cancer. They participated in the 3rd annual, "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk.
Individuals and teams left Pride Field about 9 a.m. Saturday for a trek across campus, all to increase awareness of the disease and to raise money to fight it.
More than $36,000 was collected during the event.
"It just means a lot to all of us to come out here and raise money for awareness," said Melanie Pickering, a volunteer for the event.
"It's important to me just to make people aware, because nobody realizes the importance of your yearly screenings and everything," said Lauren Robinson, another volunteer for the walk.
