BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
State Senator Deborah Dawkins of Pass Christian describes a television ad running about her as "chock full of lies."
Dawkins is a democrat. The ad comes from the state Republican party. It makes a number of claims, including that Dawkins has taken home hundreds of thousands of dollars in salaries and expenses in her job as a legislator.
However, Dawkins told us she makes the same salary as any other state senator. Nothing more, nothing less.
The ad also claims she missed 54 important votes in the state senate. Dawkins said she has dealt with a lot of family issues over the years, and 54 votes missed over 12 years is not really that many.
The ad also initially claimed Dawkins owned land and lived in Florida. The state Republican party now says that was wrong, but insists she owns property in Alabama.
Dawkins says that is true. But that it is a condo that has been un-livable for years, due to hurricane damage.
"I don't think people really care about that; people know where I live. I live in Mississippi. I live in Pass Christian, and I am not going anywhere," Dawkins told WLOX News.
When asked who is to blame for the mix up, she said, "Well, the candidate is ultimately responsible and ultimately will pay the price."
The candidate Dawkins is referring to Ashley Skellie of Long Beach.
When contacted by WLOX News Friday, Skellie said, "That's not my commercial. I just don't think I should comment. It is not mine, they did not share that with me."
Skellie lost to Deborah Dawkins in the last race four years ago. The election is November 8th.
