PURVIS, MS (WDAM) - As part of National School Bus Safety Week the Lamar County School Board and Superintendent Ben Burnett recognized 39 of their bus drivers Monday night.
Each of the drivers were recognized for having 10 or more years of service to the district including several with more than 20 and 30 years. Lamar County has more than one 100 bus routes on a daily basis, transporting more than 9000 students, Superintendent Burnett says school bus safety begins and ends with the drivers.
"They are the ones who are watching the road and watching the children on the bus and being our community representative," said Burnett. " We can't talk about school bus safety or keep our kids safe without honoring our bus drivers."
Several students also received recognition Monday evening for being local winners in the National School Bus Safety Poster Contest. Jordan Grover from Oak Grove Middle School won in her category at the state level.
