HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -More than 500 students from around the state descended on the Lake Terrace Convention Center Thursday to learn how right decisions can save lives in their communities and schools.
The 2011 Club Officer Training, "Just Live it", gave students ideas they can take back to their hometowns and share with their fellow students. Speakers from across the state and nation challenged students to not drink and drive, not do drugs, buckle up, stop texting and driving, and let a friend know when they are making wrong decisions while driving.
The event was put on by the 2011 Mississippi Student Advisory Board.
"A lot of teens may not have the opportunity to experience like other teens who are doing the right thing and they may see those doing the right thing and will want to get involved, but are not sure how to," said Alundis Pledge, Student Advisory Board member. "Herr we offer everyone an opportunity to get involved and we also push them to do the right thing."
The students also took part in a spirit competition, cheer contests and fund raising for local charities.
Representatives from the Governors Office of Highway Safety, M-DOT, the Tobacco Coalition, the Attorney General's Office, and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office participated in the workshops.
