USM Nursing educator works to address workforce shortage

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Katherine Nugent, Director of the Southern Miss School of Nursing has recently been appointed to a second term as Vice President of a regional board that advocates the importance of nursing education.

The organization, called the Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing, also works to address the current shortage of both nurses and nursing educators.

The council is part of the Southern Regional Education Board, which serves sixteen states.

According to Nugent, "We monitor workforce within the Southern states. We monitor accreditation statuses, we look at it in terms of initiatives. We do faculty development, but we also do position papers on what it is that nursing needs and where we stand in the Southern region."

Currently, the Southern Miss School of Nursing is stressing the need for more nurses with advanced degrees.
