LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - After allowing a big play early, the Laurel golden tornadoes used a balanced offense and a stifling defense to take down Quitman at home for their Homecoming 41-8. With the win, Laurel now takes command in the division at 2-0.
Quitman received the opening kick-off and at that point, it looked like fans were in for a tight contest. Starting from his own 35-yard line, quitman quarterback Franklin Jones found Tymdrick Parker wide open down the left sideline who bolted down to the 5-yard line.
But from that point, a five yard loss and a false start backed the line of scrimmage up to the 17-yard line, and Jones was forced into a turnover. Waiting in the corner of the endzone was senior cornerback Fenest Armstrong, who picked off Jones' pass.
That drive stalled after the panthers snuffed out a fourth-and-one run around midfield, but the tornadoes would take advantage on the following drive. From the 8-yard line, senior quarterback Dontrell Pruit perfectly executed a fake-handoff and lofted a pass over the middle to a wide open Justin Mack for the game's first score.
Laurel never looked back. Junior running back Vrizill Tillman scored to make it 14-0, then Pruitt connected with James Clark a couple drives later for his second throwing touchdown. At that point, Laurel led 28-0.
At half-time, Laurel led 34-0 and did not allow the panthers over mid-field after their initial scoring opportunity. Quitman managed to score a touchdown and a two-point conversion during the closing seconds of regulation. With the loss, Quitman falls to 5-3, and 1-1 in the division, while Laurel improves to 6-1.
