SMITH COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A bomb squad has removed a hand grenade from a classroom in Mize and parents are being allowed to pick up their children.
Earlier, officials and police were not allowing students out or parents into a Mize Attendance Center in Smith county Thursday morning.
Law enforcement and school officials ordered a lock down when an 8-year-old boy in third grade student brought what appears to be a hand grenade for show-and-tell. The grenade was real, but disarmed.
Assistant Superintendent for Smith County Schools, Priscilla Magee, said all children were kept safe their classrooms, while the suspicious device was secured. A bomb squad was called to the campus to determine if the device was live or a dummy grenade.
The child faces suspension based on a future school board decision.
