LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Laurel's Maddox Elementary School rolled out their Project Fit America Program Wednesday afternoon starting with their annual one mile walk along 16th Avenue.
Project Fit America is a national non-profit organization that provides cardiovascular health and fitness programs to schools and creates opportunities for children to be active, fit and healthy. The program at Maddox was funded by a $25,000 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi and PFA. The money was used to purchase and install unique fitness weight room equipment and provide curriculum guides. It also paid for workshops for the physical education teachers.
"I'm hoping it will help get our students get involved and give them a reason to be motivated and more active in our curriculum and become more healthy and fit students," said Missy Johnson, Physical Education Teacher at Maddox.
Project Fit America has invested over $4.5 in the program in over 160 schools across America.
