HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Residents of one of Hattiesburg's most historic neighborhoods announced on Tuesday that their community received national honors as being one of this country's great places.
The Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood, which is home to about 980 residents, was declared a 2011 Great Neighborhood from the American Planning Association.
Each year that non profit organization selects ten great neighborhoods, streets and public spaces as part of their Great Places in America program.
In addition to the national distinction, the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood is also the only community in Mississippi to receive that award.
The distinctive architecture, mature trees and friendly atmosphere all help to define this part of the city. The Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood was first established in the late 1880's.
