Wesley announces Chest Pain Center accreditation

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A new accreditation makes Wesley Medical Center one of six designated chest pain centers in Mississippi.

After an evaluation of its ability to assess, diagnose and treat possible heart attack patients, the Society of Chest Pain Centers gave Wesley a stamp of approval.

The accreditation means Wesley has strict guidelines aimed at treating patients more quickly during the critical window of time when the heart muscle can be preserved.

Wesley CEO Mike Neuendorf said, "We are certainly excited to have the first and only chest pain accreditation in this market, it has been a long time coming. We have been working on this for about 12 months with The Society of Chest Pain Centers. A rigorous process on the front end, ensuring that policies and procedures in place."

"When you are having a heart attack," said Wesley Cardiologist Dr. Mark Campbell, "Getting to a hospital that has the capabilities that we have at Wesley Medical Center, to get that artery that's causing the heart attack open as quickly as possible is the most important thing relative to how you are going to do."

Only 12 percent of hospitals nationwide have been granted this type of accreditation.
