PETAL, MS (WDAM) - In Petal on Thursday, Superintendents from across the country were visiting the Friendly City's highly ranked school system to share ideas and possibly implement some of them in their own districts.
Petal is part of an organization called the Eastern States Consortium. Members of the group are from school systems in Tennessee, Ohio, Virginia, Louisiana and Indiana. Each year the consortium selects a particular school district within the organization to visit.
During Thursday's meeting, the visitors were treated to a tour of Petal High School to learn more about some of the programs they have implemented to keep the district highly rated.
Each of the school districts within the Eastern States Consortium are similar in size and they are all very successful with their home states. John Buchanan is the Superintendent of the Petal School District.
Buchanan said, "You know a lot of times, we get so caught up in what is going on in our world, in our little district, in our state. It's very refreshing to have an opportunity to get a different perspective from some really, really strong school districts in states that we don't typically have a chance to do some collaborations with."
The Superintendents also visited Petal Primary School on Thursday. They are staying in Mississippi for three days this week.
