Texas man walks for special needs children

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Shola McCarthy of Cedar Hill Texas is walking across America to raise money and bring awareness to the needs of children with Autism, Down Syndrome and who are mentally challenged.

McCarthy began his walk September 12th in Cedar Hill and has traveled around 600 miles in 15 days. Walking about 40 miles a day, he plans on completing his walk in Orlando, Fla. sometime next month.

He is taking on the challenge because he wants to help build a facility for special needs children in Texas and because his own son has a form of Down Syndrome.

"It inspires those that have children with special needs. So I know people here in Mississippi have children with special needs or know somebody with special needs," said McCarthy. "So that's why I walk. I walk for your kids as well as my mine."
