HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - More than 2,500 people gathered at Southern Miss Saturday morning to help fight heart disease.
They participated in the annual, Heartwalk for the American Heart Association. The 5-K event raises funds for research and education related to curing heart disease.
Organizers say the event continues to grow.
"Our first year, we had about 75 participants and raised about $45,000 and this year I'm proud to say we have over 2,500 participants and have raised over $135,000 and we still have money coming in today, so it's very exciting," said Eve Elias, regional director of the American Heart Association.
About 50 teams of walkers, as well as individuals, took part in the event.
