HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg Fire Department was one step closer on Thursday to purchasing some much needed new fire safety training equipment.
Thanks to a five thousand dollar grant from State Farm Insurance, the department will soon be able to buy a fire extinguisher training system. That piece of technology will simulate fire in a safe way, with a fire professional at the controls.
The total cost of the system is eight thousand dollars and the department explained that they do have other funding avenues to come up with the remaining three thousand dollars needed to purchase the system.
Geneva Morgan is an Investigator with the Hattiesburg Fire Department. She applied for the grant on behalf of the organization.
According to Morgan, "We actually go in and teach about a thousand people a year how to use fire extinguishers. Last month alone at Hattiesburg High School, we had four hundred students that we taught how to use fire extinguishers properly, with the old method that we had."
The fire department said their previous method of conducting fire extinguisher training was forty years old and firefighters want to have more control over the training exercise, should a problem occur.
