PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Tropical Storm Lee not only brought severe weather and flooding to the Pine Belt, but also caused a disruption to the supply of red poppies for the American Legion Auxiliary in Petal.
Each year the American Legion Auxiliary provides individuals with red poppies, created by disabled veterans, in exchange for a donation. This year, Tropical Storm Lee forced some veterans to move around, causing a delay in poppy production. With ample supplies now in place, Post 146 in Petal plans to begin distribution beginning Saturday at the Pecan Festival in Richton.
Grace Kersh, President of the Post 146 American Legion Auxiliary, says they will accept any donation amount in return for a red poppy. All proceeds from poppy donations will go to support veterans. Post 146 expects to continue distribution of poppies in their hometown of Petal in October.
