HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Two of the top runners in the state will be running cross country at William Carey University starting in 2012. Kayla Stricker along with her brother Anthony Stricker officially signed on today with Carey and second-year head coach Ben Smith.
The two were welcomed by a gathering of teammates and family in the library at Oak Grove High School, where they officially signed their letters of intent. In 2009, Kayla captured the individual state title for cross country and helped her team place runner-up at the same event a year later. She also garnered all-state honors a season ago, and holds personal bests of 19:30 for five kilometers, 5:26 for 1600 meters, and 10 feet the pole vault.
Her brother Anthony, also an all-state honoree in 2010, won two of the four events he competed in at the start of 2011. He qualified for the state track and field championships in the 1600 meter, and recently set his personal best of 16:30 for five kilometers at the East Central Invitational.
Both Kayla and Anthony begin their careers with Carey next season.
