Korey Williams Named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Miss senior linebacker Korey Williams has earned the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday afternoon in a vote by selected league media members and released by the conference office.

Williams led the Golden Eagles with 10 tackles, seven of which were solo stops, in a 52-6 win over Southeastern Louisiana.  He added one tackle for loss and snatched an interception for the second-straight game.

Williams' interception return went for 60 yards and a touchdown, marking the first return for a score in his collegiate career as he tallied his third career pick. Williams leads the Golden Eagles in tackles this season with 31 stops and has paced the defense in tackles for Southern Miss in each of the last two seasons.

This is the first league weekly award for Williams in his career and the second for the Golden Eagle defense this season through the first three weeks of the campaign. The last time Southern Miss won the defensive honor at least twice was during the 2004 season when they tallied five weekly awards from the conference.

Houston's Case Keenum and Tulane's Ryan Griffin shared the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Special Teams recognition went to UAB kick returner Nick Adams.

The Golden Eagles (2-1) return to action this Saturday when they travel to Virginia (2-1) for a non-conference tilt. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. CT.
