HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Miss (2-1) nearly doubled the offensive output of Southeastern Louisiana (1-2), gained 335 yards on the ground, and defeated the Lions 52-6 at 'the Rock.' The scoring began with 8:47 left in the first quarter, when Jamal Woodyard received a pass from senior quarterback Austin Davis and ran it 23 yards for a score.
Sophomore running back Kendrick Hardy followed up that score with a touchdown of his own with 14:43 left in the second quarter to make it 14-0. While he tossed two touchdowns, Davis threw for only 143 yards on 16 attempts.
He didn't have to do much, though, as the Golden Eagle offense averaged nearly seven yards a carry on 53 rushing attempts. Hardy finished the night with 155 yards rushing on 18 carries. Not to be overlooked was the defense, who entered the ball game having to face an offense that averaged nearly 90 plays a contest.
The defense did not allow a touchdown, and picked off three passes, two of which were returned for scores. The first came courtesy of senior linebacker Korey Williams, who stepped in front of a pass just as the first half expired and returned it 60 yards for the score.
Sophomore Octavious Thomas intercepted another pass and returned it six yards for a touchdown, this one coming with 6:37 remaining in the game and ended up being the final score of the night. Next week, the Golden Eagles travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the University of Virginia.
